The worrying thing is that this issue threatens to create yet another divide of haves & have-nots, another black-list, another knee-jerk solution with ill-thought through repercussions that will affect those less able, and benefit those in control. Will it target those making illicit profits? My instinct says – not at all – it will just increase the motive for those determined to steal content..

Thanks for the kind comments – The point is that the kind of talented “unknown” DIY artists who have posted work in this competition, and who are not the property of any media corporations, actually BENEFIT from file-sharing by random surfers. None of us lose by being more widely known, although of course we want to be protected against people using our work for their own profit and not paying us our rightful share. One thing is for sure – we all lose if we allow Big Business or the State to start controlling who may or may not access the web, and give arbitary powers to their agents to disconnect people without having to prove wrong-doing in the courts. There is an amazing creative global revolution occuring, and the times they are a-changin. But we need to defend that revolution against the forces that still want to reduce every human interaction to a money-making transaction.
